Face-to-Face Registration Sessions
Don’t forget that our mandatory Face-to-Face Registration Sessions will be held in Caddell Hall on both Saturday, February 20th, from 9:00 a.m. – noon, and Monday, February 29th, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. All your registration paperwork will be sent home in a special packet on Tuesday, February 16th, so that you can have everything filled out prior to registration. We would really appreciate your help in this, as registration would be much quicker if everyone came prepared. (The registration packet will also include our 2016-2017 tuition schedules, which show a 1-2% increase, depending on your tuition tier. The tuition increase was approved by the Parish Finance Council on January 28th, and this increase in revenue will help us to continue to make improvements to our program, and hopefully keep our budget “in the black.”) We will also be having a Spanish language registration in late February (date to be announced). Keep in mind that if you register prior to February 29th, you save money. We look forward to seeing you at one of the registration sessions.
Tuition Assistance Opportunities
In reference to upcoming registration and increased tuition rates, we would like to remind you that we do have several tuition assistance options. In addition to Divine Redeemer parishioners receiving a large discount due to a subsidy paid by the parish, and parishioners of other Catholic churches receiving a subsidy, we also have some formal scholarships available. Information on these programs, including St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Tuition Assistance Grant (for Catholic families in need), St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship (for special needs students), and additional parish assistance for low-income families, will be included in your registration packet. Keep in mind that families applying for needs-based tuition assistance will be required to submit proof of financial need. Those applying for the St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship will have different criteria, including medical/educational issues. Please read through tuition assistance materials carefully, as deadlines will be adhered to in all cases. Any families that are currently on financial aid of any type will be required to reapply, and to submit proper financial information, in order to receive ongoing assistance.
Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras
Many thanks to Miss Lori and her crew of volunteers who made Fat Tuesday so much fun for our students. The pancake and sausage breakfast was a great way to start the day, and I understand that we ended up with only three pancakes left! (Over 300 pancakes were cooked!) Later that afternoon we celebrated Mardi Gras in true DRS style. Jullie-Allison De Faria and Dalton Posadas were elected queen and king, while younger students Emma Darnell and Enzo Martin were the princess and prince. All students had a wonderful time catching beads, playing carnival games, and munching on a variety of yummy treats. As always our older students partnered up with the little ones, and made sure that each had a great time. Thanks again, everyone!
School Advisory Board Training
Each year our School Advisory Board receives specialized training for their positions on the board. On Saturday, February 6th, Mrs. Vice and board member Pat Davis attended an all-day workshop in Columbia, at the brand new campus of Cardinal Newman High School. The keynote speaker was Dr. Regina Haney, former NCEA Director of Boards and Councils. After her talk, Mrs. Vice and Mr. Davis had the opportunity to take classes of interest, including “Identify, Recruit, Retain Board/Council Members,” and “Managing the Work of the Board/Council,” and attend collaborative sessions regarding Facilities and Catholic Identity. On Thursday, February 11th, Sandra Leatherwood, the Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Charleston, provided additional training to all board members from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In case you have forgotten, our board members include: Mike Lane, Pat Davis, Regina Soriano, Claudette Blanks, Lonnie Burbage, Mary Wijetunga, Angie Cease, Cynthia Kirby, Renee Darnell, and our newest member, Benjamin Mora. Thanks to all of our board members who set aside an extra few hours each month to serve the school.
Thank You!!!!! Divine Redeemer School’s Beta Club would like to thank you. The “SouperBowl” collection was a huge success. Due to your generosity, we will be donating $921 to Lowcountry Food Bank. Thanks especially to the students, parents, and teachers who stood outside weekend masses collecting money from our parishioners.
Geography Bee Winners
Catholic Schools’ Week Festivities were enjoyed by all, but the culmination of the week was definitely the Geography Bees, held on Earth Appreciation Day, Friday, February 5th. Students in grades K-4 competed at 8:00 that morning, while the older students showed off their geography skills at 1:00 p.m. The questions, which were created by a panel of teachers, were both interesting and challenging, but most of our competitors (two from each grade) remained in the competition for several rounds. When all was said and done, the primary winner of the Geography Bee was Lyla Darnell, grade 3, and the middle school winner was Dalton Posadas, grade 8. Both Lyla and Dalton received an Atlas for placing first in these exciting competitions. While these two students “won,” there were no losers, as all students enjoyed decorating and eating a giant “Continent Cookie” at the end of the day.
Production Night Talent Wanted
Our next production night will be held on Thursday, February 25th at 6:30 p.m. in Caddell Hall. It will entail a display of art work from students of all ages. We would like to extend an invitation to all students who are musically talented to provide “background music” for this event. If your child sings or plays an instrument, please contact the office so that we can plan for him or her to perform during the Art Faire. Certain types of dancers may also be able to participate. (See enclosed flyer for more information.)
Sending Love and Gratitude Your Way
The 3rd and 4th graders would like to thank all those who bought candy grams for Valentine’s Day. Thanks to your support, we were able to raise $134.10, which will be donated to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody!!!
