Weekly Update Sept 30, 2016

Double Dog Dare You

Our fifth and sixth graders are very privileged to be able to participate in the DARE Program through Hanahan Police Department this year.  Under the direction of Officer Perry, students in these grades will go through the DARE Program, which raises drug awareness, and provides information on other age-appropriate topics.  The program is usually administered to fifth graders in public schools, but we were lucky enough to be invited to share the program with both our fifth and sixth graders.  The classes will be held weekly for a total of ten weeks, and are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 4th.

October is the Month of the Rosary

Traditionally our church devotes special attention to The Rosary during the months of October and May.  We will begin our month of devotion to our Blessed Mother by saying an all-school Rosary on Wednesday, October 5th, right after our 8:00 a.m. Communion Service.  We would love to have you join us in the grotto for this very special time together.  The eighth graders will lead us in saying The Rosary, which will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m.  Please try to remember to send your child’s Rosary beads with him or her that day.

In 1492, Columbus MAY Have Sailed the Ocean Blue…

Columbus Day, a national holiday, will be observed on Monday, October 10th.  Both school and ESP will be closed that day.  However, our middle school students will be going to camp that day, even though there is no school.  Plan accordingly.

Beta Club News

The Beta Club will be collecting aluminum pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House.  Today each student was given a plastic cup to help collect them.  Whenever you fill a cup, please send the tabs to school.  We will continue to collect them throughout the year.  Thank you!

Soccer Shoot-Out Success

On Tuesday, September 27th, after school, many of our students competed in the Knights of Columbus Soccer Shoot-Out District Competition.  Under the direction of Miss Lori, and a representative from the Knights of Columbus, the following students qualified to compete at the next level:

Lorena Vazquez Suaste, gr. 8, Luis Gonzalez Zabrera, gr. 6, Edward Lopez Guzman, gr. 6, Heidi Suaste, gr. 5, Jonan Lopez Garcia, gr. 4, Gianna Hanley, gr. 4, and Ricardo Gonzalez Zabrera, gr. 4.

Congratulations to all of our Knights of Columbus (Donald J. Godfrey Council 6726) winners, and thank you to all of our students who came out and had fun.  We will keep you posted on future competitions and successes.

See You Sunday???

Don’t forget…this Sunday, October 2nd, the school and parish will be hosting a very special event, which will involve educational displays, oral reports, music, entertainment, and of course…FOOD!  We hope you will plan to join in for this exciting event.  The “fiesta” will begin right after Spanish Mass, which is at 1:00 p.m.  If you haven’t attended our Spanish Mass, make it a goal.  It is a wonderful opportunity to worship our Lord in a warm and lively setting.  After Mass, head over to Caddell Hall for the celebration.  Learn about Spanish heritage from our student projects, and support our community by purchasing your delicious lunch from our devoted Hispanic community, who will be providing authentic cuisine.  We have gotten permission to utilize the parking lot of Highland Park Baptist (just behind the lower school playground) for overflow parking.
