DRS Olympics…The Thrill of Victory
On Tuesday, September 6th, students in all grades had the opportunity to compete as “Olympic athletes.” From the Opening Ceremony, which found each of our students marching behind the flag of a country, to the lighting of the Olympic Torch, to the actual competitions, to the awards presented on the platform, to the flame being extinguished at the end of the day – a wonderful time was had by all. Mrs. Karen Provost organized this fantastic event, and facilitated each and every child playing an important role. Younger students were paired up with older ones, as they went through a series of activities. Then the students in grades 5-8 competed in the sporting events of their choice, including Javelin, Shot Put, Hurdles, Relays, Long Jump, etc. After the individual competitions, there was a Soccer tournament and a Volleyball tournament held simultaneously, which was attended by the younger students who cheered for the various countries in action. Chants of U-S-A could be heard, along with MEX-I-CO and other represented nations. Student athletes earned gold, silver and bronze medals for their individual prowess, and teams were awarded as well. (The medals were cleverly created by Mrs. Provost and her family, and involved Golden Oreos on a ribbon and different colored washers, as well.) From start to finish, it was a beautiful day. Many thanks to Mrs. Provost, and to all the teachers and parent volunteers, who made this day so special for all of our DRS Olympians.
It’s Standardized Testing Time
Every fall, Catholic school students across the nation partake in standardized testing to measure growth and plan curriculum. Students in grades 1-8 will be taking tests beginning on Monday, September 19th. We should have all testing completed by the end of that week. Teachers will be administering tests each day before lunch, and will try to start as early as possible. For this reason, please make an extra effort to be on time each day that week, and try not to schedule any medical appointments in the morning hours. It is very helpful for the teacher in planning if each and every student completes these tests. Results from these tests should be available in late October for your review.
See You At the School Yard
Don’t forget…this Saturday, is our “Parish/School Yard Clean-Up Day.” We need all kinds of willing hands to come and help with weeding, cleaning, and generally “sprucing up” our campus. This is a great way to take care of some of your 25 required annual volunteer hours, and it will be fun, too! So come on over on Saturday, September 10th, between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m., and bring your volunteer spirit and a big smile! (If we have to reschedule due to inclement weather, this event will be held on Saturday, September 17th.)
First PTO Meeting of the 2016-2017 School Year
On Monday, September 12th, we will hold our first PTO meeting of the year. We also have a new way of raising funds for the Parent Club…on each date that a PTO meeting is held, students will have the option to “purchase” a dress down day for $1.00. So send your child to school on Monday in free dress, and be sure to send in a dollar. Students will pay their teachers that morning. THEN…come to the Potluck and meeting at 6:30 p.m. See you there!
Have You Invited Your Grandparents Yet?
Last week we sent home the invitation to Grandparents’ Mass, which will be held on Wednesday, September 14th at 8:00 a.m. If you haven’t yet invited Grandma and Grandad, or Abuela and Abuelo, do it today! We want to honor them at Mass and at a reception in Caddell Hall immediately after Mass.
School Picnic Coming
Divine Redeemer Catholic School is having a picnic on Saturday, October 8th at Wannamaker County Park, from 11:00-3:30. (There is a flyer in today’s packet.) Come and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers and lots of fun games! Keep in mind there is a park entry fee, but other than that, it is FREE. Don’t forget to RSVP so we know how many meals to prepare.
Speaking of events at the park…did you remember to sign up for the DRS Kickball Team? Mrs. Provost is in charge! If you forgot but want to play, give her a call ASAP. Teams should be mixed children/adults. We want everyone to play!!!
